Why and how could this have happened? I’m of the opinion that it was simply a case of greed. It’s a tragedy for those who have bravely come forward about some of the worst moments of their lives. That means that all civil litigation brought against the organization is for now on hold. Now, according to a court document filed this Tuesday, the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) has declared bankruptcy in the face of hundreds of sexual abuse lawsuits. There are thousands of men (and possibly more) who say they have the same or a similar story, making this one of the largest sexual abuse scandals in modern history. This is the legacy of the Boy Scouts in my life. I have built walls around me so thick and so tall that even my family will say that I am distant. My experience with the Scouts destroyed my childhood, led to depression, drug and alcohol abuse, loneliness, despair, four failed marriages, and a failed suicide attempt. I am a 56-year-old man who was repeatedly sexually assaulted by my scout leader when I was a 12-year-old Boy Scout.
